Triste Trieste nel cinema: Svevo visto da Bolognini

The downloaded print is awful, a real pity because Bolognini mis-en-scene and Nanuzzi's stunning cinematography are beautiful, too beautiful, like always with Bolognini's adaptations. I have always said the trouble is that he is not Visconti, and his films remain on the nice surface of decoration and costumes (here, the maestro Piero Tosi signed and put Claudia Cardinale  -C.C- alla Louise Brooks).

Trieste was triste (sad). Interesting city with wild History in the Wold Wars, Trieste was the biggest port of the Austrian- Hungarian empire until 1918 (they only did Pula and other small Istrian fishing villages). The plot is set in the first years of the legal Italian rule, also the first years of ventennio nero, Mussolini's fascism, the 20's. Like in another film starred by C.C, Gli indiferenti the atmosphere is sordid. Senilità is a Svevo's work. The time of indifferent is by Alberto Moravia, one is Triestian, the other Roman. Both films are all American casting with C.C with 20's outfits, and other woman's voice. She was dubbed until Fellini did use her strong and sexy ronca voce in 8 1/2.
Both authors used psychological introspection techniques for their characters. The difference was regional, Svevo wrote in Italian but his world and influences were more Mitteleuropa, Austrian. I confess I have not read the novel, so I only can judge the film and say that it is cold.
I've read Agostino and I've seen Bolognini's adaptation of Moravia's novella. It was absolute faithful to the author, but also was cold: Ingrid Thulin acts well but she and all are too cold.

What was the problem then with all M.B period films? Too much respect, too much coldness. He lost the fresh and mastery of his 50's present films (Arrangiatevi, La note brava...). Even  Metello is strange beautifully (working class in Firenze, Pratolini's novel, it doesn't work as it should be). Even Bubù is stunning (prostitution, illness).

I repeat: Triste was part of Austria, and even today the influence is remarkable.

Pictures I have made using that dreadful DIVX print.

Vienna was the capital of the Empire. Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) was the ruling Bourgeois fashion. We can enjoy doors, and applicate goods in the film.  Tradition of Vienesse Cafés. Nothing similar to the rest of Italy. This is the intelligentsia world.

The band of music plays on Sunday. Yes, like in all the Austrian towns, with the soldiers, the women clerks, and the "decent" people, all making their walk, saying good morning, good bye to everyone. This is province. This is bourgeois double life. Read to Stephan Zweig.

Betsy Blair was a great actress. I don't understand how she ended making great films in Europe, always dubbed, always as an old spinter. After Marty, she was a spinter in Juan Antonio Bardem's Calle Mayor. Here plays the sister. Sexual repression, hunger for love. Great, moving role for an a great actress.

Claudia Cardinale's erotism and Beauty. I think she is not perfect with that wig.

Horrible print, we know, but is that a  nipple?

Like in Austria, trams.

Pictures I found in the net.

    1. I have not seen this film, but generally speaking I do agree with your osservations on Bolognini's cinema.
In Italian, we would say "Svevo visto da Bolognini", not "visto per Bolognini".

Well Betsy Blair got away from the US because the Witch hunt of McCarthy. You must remember that she was Gene Kelly's Wife and he cut his connection with her after their divorce

  4. Did Gene Kelly cut his marriage because the Witch hunting? That's coward, not a charming gentleman. I know he spent time in Europe for not paying taxes in America. How do you call his attitude?

Betsy Blair was great even dubbed.

You must remember that people like Bogart or Houston chickened when the Witch Hunting became serious.

  7. I thought of the three Bolognini films, Senilita, Bell'Antonio, La viaccia...Senilita was the best. Fantastico. Angiolina was wickedly sexy and fun to play! Poor Emilio. :)
